Kid 3: Really?
Mom: Where did you get that information?
Kid 2: It's here in the book that I am reading. And do you know that even if they live in the water, they cannot breathe underwater? They need to get to the surface just to get air.
Kid 3: Okay...
A few moments of silence...
Kid 3: If whales cannot breathe underwater, then why do they live in the water? Shouldn't they be on land like us?
Whooa.
Dead silence.
Now, it is time for the Mom to research what in the world is the grand Purpose of whales underwater!
Oh man, I should have taken a doctorate in Marine Biology before having this kind of kids.

answer: it's how God made them (whales) . we were all created by God for a purpose. the whales were made to swim like a fish but breathe like a man. if the whales were put on land, how will they move?-fly? walk? hop? - they are so big they would certainly require a lot of space that's why they're in the ocean- where it's big and roomy.
okay. that was the explanation ( more or less) i gave my kids eons ago.
