Do you know that when we give our kids choices, it helps them be good decision makers?

Studies show that giving kids choices to decide helps them:

1. develop better perception of things around them, how to make good judgment and even develop their sense of self-confidence;

2. be in control thus it gives them logical assessment and perception of situations;

3. have sense of self-reliance, consequently confidence is boosted;

4. get an idea of how "cause and effect" happens , which they will use later and very frequently in adult life!

Giving choices need not be in all situation. When "no choice" situations happen, it is best that we explain it to them!

I was bewildered by the moment and thought of sharing it.

Just yesterday my husband was an invited speaker. He was given an hour to speak in front of students regarding I.T. related concepts. We decided that my eldest daughter would be the one to do the introduction of him. No hesitations, she agreed.

It was a such a sight to behold: my own baby has grown up and now speaking in front of people to introduce her Dad! It seems like only yesterday when we were busy changing diapers and mixing her milk. Now she is 10 years old and grown and has her own confidence to face an audience.

For a parent, it is such an affirmation to see our children grow, not necessarily perfect or ideal - just themselves and part of us.

Joyful tears and tearful joys are good, right?

My roommates and I once: partied inside our room when there was an electricity outage.

Never in my life have I: been drunk.

High school was: fun, carefree and no-worry time!

When I’m nervous: my hands and voice shake.

My hair: is dry, semi-rebonded and needs a new treatment.

When I was 5: i was always playing outside of our house with my sisters!

When I turn my head left: windows with blue curtains.

I should be: thinking of my career move.

By this time next year: hope i have my own business or new career that i will enjoy.

My favorite aunt is: no aunt, my mom is an only girl and my papa was an only child.

I have a hard time understanding: html codes, complicated Math equations and Annabel Rama.

You know I like you if: i talk to you right away.

My ideal breakfast is: tapsilog, daing na bangus with tomatoes and coffee.

If you visit my home town:which one? i feel i haven't visited for too long (11 years) thus out of touch

If you spend the night at my house: i will cook for you and feed you while we chat endlessly..
The animal I would like to see flying besides birds: colorful butterflies

I shouldn’t have been: too reflective deciding on my career shift.

Last night I: blogged till about 1 am.

A better name for me would be: Allisondra.

I’ve been told I look like: Gellie de Belen?

If I could have any car, it would be: Toyota Prado or Innova.

Off we went to a university painting exhibit today. It was just a five minute walk from our home. The girls had fun analyzing different media used in each painting such as acrylic, poster, charcoal, pencil sketches, etc.

It was a visual treat for them, especially for my eldest who loves to draw and sketch everyday of her life!

Here are my two younger kids viewing and analyzing a painting.

Blurred shot of my eldest using just a cellphone camera.

one of their favorite paintings ...

The best part of the day was when the Daddy came home from his trip with this box of sugar overload!!!!

No, I am not in such dire need of compliments, but I have to admit we all need intrinsic motivations such as these, every once in a while!

"Here are my five favorite KICK ASS BLOGGERS.Do you know any bloggers that kick ass?

Maybe they've got incredible, original content. Or they're overflowing with creativity. Is it someone that helps
you become a better blogger? Or a bloggy friend you know you can count on? Or maybe it's someone who simply inspires you to be a better person... or someone else who sends you to the floor, laughing your ass off.

Whatever the reason may be, I'm sure you know at least a couple of bloggers that kick ass. Well... why not tell 'em so?

Long day.
That's what I cal today.
In the morning, everything seemed to drag on. Woke up on the wrong side of the bed with a only a few hours of sleep. But I had to wake up anyway. My eldest was already in school when I woke up.
When there is very short stay in la-land and with the gloomy weather to match with it, every single thing seems displaced.
But I carried through anyway.
Hope to be more alive and kicking tomorrow!

Seafood Galore!

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

I am such a sucker for seafood.

I drool over pictures of different sea food recipes. Name any seafood recipe , I will eat it anytime and whatever way it is cooked.
Shrimps, fish, crabs or squid are really among my top food favorite. Give me a whole week just eating seafood and by all means, I will be more than willing to extend it for another week of seafood diet. More than just being delicious, different variety of seafood are good source of iodine and protein thus they are good for the body.
That is why, when I chanced upon this seafood cook off through www.GreatAmericanSeafoodCookOff.com, I immediately browsed over the different new recipes from different chefs, and took my time scrutinizing each entry. It was tough deciding which entry to vote for since all entries are mouth-watering creations! I finally decided to vote for Texas Gulf Shrimp recipe by Chef Mark Holley. More than being healthy, the Texas Gulf Shrimp recipe contains all-natural ingredients made up of different herbs, spices, cheese, black beans and many others.
The cook off encourages the benefits of using locally produces seafood because of its sustainability. More than being fresh, great tasting and healthy, it can also promote the local market of seafood.
On my part, aside from the love for seafood, I love the idea of knowing new recipes and having the chance to win a free trip to New Orleans! Imagine the opportunity to learn more about seafood recipes plus the chance to win a free trip. So, why not also try and vote for your choice?

those three words described my today.

hubby tweaked and redesigned my blog.
for a moment i thought i misheard him when he said he had scheduled half of the day to tweak my blog.

then he did it.
so thankful that he took his time and spent more than half of the day tweaking and reconfiguring the codes.

he was fast and i was thrilled for the long overdue make-over.

thank goodness for holidays.

if you want your blog redesigned, he does it on the sides.

especially on holidays. lol

Web Hosts

Sunday, August 24, 2008

I live with a web developer and designer: my husband. Everyday, web hosts or web hosting are constant phrases that are part of our everyday conversations. Even our children hear those phrases every now and then. I know it is quite difficult to choose among the array of choices available online these days but looking at statistics and number of clients served will be good parameters to be confident of web hosts choices. My husband's clients look for the best and reliable choices, not just cheap ones. Because it does not follow that those which offer cheapest are really the most reliable ones.

Hannah Photoshop

Here is my nine year (9) old daughter's FIRST ever attempt with Photoshop on her own . I have no idea where (online) she got the pictures. For sure she just Googled them...

Recently, she started mumbling terms like drop shadow, cropping, toggle, etc. I saw her reading her Dad's HTML book. I asked her why she was browsing the book. She told me she was looking for color codes...Well, what can I say? A blogger for a Mom and a web designer/developer for a Dad, what else can be the product?

Well,I have a techie growing up in the house!

Arlene, you're one good tagger! Thanks for this, girl!

...is someone to who will accept me for who I am and what will I become.

We need friends for many reasons,
all throughout the season.
We need friends to comfort us
when we are sad,
and to have fun with us when we are glad.

We need friends to give us good advice,
We need someone we can count on,
and treat us nice.

We need friends to remember us
one we have passed
sharing memories that will always last.

That will be my question for Michael Phelps' Mom.

Or for the rest of the Olympians who will bring home the golds.

Since the Beijing Olympics began, that has been a nagging question in my mind.

Or was it since the day I heard about the sixteen years old who graduated from U.P. with Physics course, summa cum laude.

What do you think?

I know geneticists can very well explicate how genes play for exceptional human beings.

However, as a parent I still wonder how the nurture-nature factor affects achievers like them.

What is your choice: is it the genes (nature) or the milk (nurture)?

I guess, it's discipline, baby...discipline.

Instant gratification is one outcomes of today's fast-paced world.

In a blink of an eye, everything happens instantly:internet technology, instant food, instant messaging, digital access to entertainment, instant calls, etc.
When everything happens in a blink of an eye, there is no room for patience to develop.
Patience is one rare virtue, the generation of today has yet to learn.
That is including me.

As parents, it is quite difficult to teach patience and waiting or even taking turns to children. How can our children learn the virtue when there is very rare practice?

I, for one, is guilty for the lack of it.
I hate waiting.
I do not like the agony of prolonged gratification.

Right now, I know I am given the loooonggg chance to practice patience. And it is not easy.
It is never easy to wait, hope and let the days go on without the outcomes right away.

How about you?

Last week, my dear hubby told me that his father needs to undergo an eye surgery. I was quite agog to learn such fact. Last time I saw him, he was up and well. At 71 years of age, I always perceived him to be fairly strong. Thus, the news bothered me a little.
The moment i heard the news, i searched online for different information regarding eye surgery or operation and I came across LASIK information.
I just came to know that Lasik is a process for vision correction. It is a well-studied medical procedure that brings about superior safety and quality visual result. Although not all people are eligible to undergo Lasik procedure, it is a highly recommended surgery for those who need to get better vision in the painless way.
Would you believe that even the NASA and U.S. Military have approved of the use Lasik, which combines customized treatment for the 1st all-laser technology and 3D mapping, even for pilots and astronauts!
I wonder if my father-in-law would like to try Lasik. It is truly a necessity for him to undergo the eye surgery to relieve him of the discomfort plus correct his vision in the earliest possible time.

3. What age were you allowed to date?
- there was no age limit but we were always told that before anything else, we have to attend to our studies first.

4. What’s the craziest thing you did (for love) when you were a teenager?
- there are a lot but not when i was still a teener...

5. How long was your longest relationship and what’s the secret?
- see number 2 answer. secret? fight well LOL. and get it over and done with, then talk about it. Acceptance is the key, i guess with no ifs or buts.

6. How long did you date before you decided to settle down?
- more than 2 years before the wedding date.

7. How did you know he was the ONE?
- we always hit it off, leveled kami - intellectually, socially and emotionally. sort of matched. then being quite opposite with our personalities helped to balance it off.

8. Now, at what age will you allow your kids(s) to date?
- maybe after 18!

9. When it comes to your kids dating, will you be a cool parent or a strict parent?
- I will never be a cool parent, it is just not me. sometimes i wish i am, but i wont be one.

10. What piece of advice can you give to your child when they start dating?
- that they do not have to do anything demoralizing or way out of morals, just to please others or be accepted. Valuing or respecting themselves are the best things they can give themselves cause others will follow suit!

Kicking Award!

Saturday, August 09, 2008

This award came from Liza. Thank you so much Liza!

Do you know any bloggers that kick ass?

Maybe they’ve got incredible, original content. Or they’re overflowing with creativity. Is it someone that helps you become a better blogger? Or a bloggy friend you know you can count on? Or maybe it’s someone who simply inspires you to be a better person… or someone else who sends you to the floor, laughing your ass off.

Whatever the reason may be, I’m sure you know at least a couple of bloggers that kick ass. Well… why not tell ‘em so?

LOVE ON ‘EM

* Choose 5 bloggers that you feel are “Kick Ass Bloggers”

Imagine machines beeping from all around, clock ticking to the last minute. Then a booming voice fills the whole Earth to say:
"The earth will self-destruct in seconds - five, four... three... two... one!"
Boom!
Then everything is gone in a split second.
Then human extinction happens! Unless we can do something and save humanity just like in the new free game Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa which carries the line : Operation Immortality: Leave your mark. Save Humanity.. Like many online RPGs (role playing games) that my kids play, I also imagine how life would be in outer space or in another planet. These days, possibilities are endless when it comes to ideas such as living in outer space.

If this happens to us: what will you bring with you to wherever you are going or to the new planet? Why would you choose to grab such gadget?
I was caught off-guard with these questions, too. In fact, I had to think long and deep and settled to the idea that I will bring my laptop with me.
The first reason is I have stored plenty of my written articles in my laptop. Second, there are so many other things I can do with it unlike any other tools in the house, which have limited functionality. I just do not know if it will be as functional when I will be in another planet.

I love tags.

Do not get me wrong.

I love receiving them from blogger friends.Tag is one of the ways to get acquainted with the blogosphere populace.

Every now and then, i still feel the thrill when a blogger friend tags me. I feel special. And without batting an eyelash, i do tags very often.

Tags make my technorati explode and my blog rank soar. More than that, viral linking helps and hopefully, PR will follow suit, right? Who wouldn't want that? Not to mention that doing tags is one way to help each other's blog soar, right?

That is why I got shocked to discover a fact about SOME tags recently.

In one of the tags I did, i had a difficult time posting thus I asked my dear techy/web developer husband to do the codes. He does it on a Notepad and with few tinkering he was finished in a jiffy.

He was shocked to discover that most links of the bloggers who posted their links in that particular tag has "no follow" link. So what does that mean?

Will it make my technorati soar? Probably.

Will it affect my Alexa Rank? Hmm. Yes.

But will Mr. G. recognize the links when he does the spider crawl?

I doubt.

Big doubt.

Go figure.

Now, i just realized for those with "no follow" yes, they will benefit the tag because those who tag along carry their links...But what about for those who tag along them?

More doubts.

Go find out. This is interesting...

Nothing beats freedom.
Nothing will ever substitute the feeling of choosing, deciding and creating for yourself.
Do you agree with me?
That is why when decorating our own homes with drapes, or different window treatments, it feels so exhilarating to choose from my own range of taste without the hassle of time or travel wastage! I so love the idea that I get to select my own fabric, color and even freedom of open pricing. This way I can take my time from the smallest detail from my swags to the specific style of my valances, without the decorator's fee tickling!

Tagged by Rachel.I did this one already but I want to share our pic again. Here I am with my three flower girls!
